     Nutrition workshop

On Wednesday afternoon, Greenfinch and Brambling classes were treated to a workshop by visiting Inspire Plus ambassador, Sophie Allen. Sophie is a British Olympic swimmer and although she has retired from competitive swimming, she is still very involved in sport locally and is passionate about children’s health and fitness.

During the workshop, Sophie explained how macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) work together to fuel your body and how having the right amount of each nutrient in childhood is vital for adult health later on too. The children talked about the kinds of foods they enjoyed regularly and Sophie explained which of the foods were good choices or how they could be substituted for healthier options.

    Forest school

How excited Robin and Goldcrest classes were on Wednesday—our first forest school session in the local environment. All dressed up ready, we set off  with our trolley laden full of drinks, tarpaulin, first aid kit and even a toilet! The setting is a beautiful all enclosed woodland on private land with a seating area made of logs and plenty of trees and grassland to play hide and seek in. We learnt a forest school song, played rhythms using sticks we had found and explored the surroundings with our friends. Everyone gave it a 10 out of 10 and we can’t wait to go again next week.

  • STEM enrichment

    Thu 09 Feb 2023

This morning Greenfinch had a fantastic time programming and racing Spheros as part of a STEM enrichment opportunity. It helped the children develop their computational thinking, and problem-solving skills. They took some time to practise and then a small team got involved in the timed races. Cones led to time penalties and the children discovered the truth behind ‘slow and steady wins the race!’ Thank you to @Discoverytrust for providing our children with this opportunity.

  • Year 5/6 Circulatory system and exploring the heart.

    Thu 09 Feb 2023

This afternoon, the children in Greenfinch had a fantastic time dissecting pig hearts as a ‘fab-finisher’ for our circulatory system topic. The children got stuck in looking for the different parts of the heart and couldn’t believe how large and strong the hearts felt. They learnt a rap to help them remember all the parts and it was brilliant to put it into practise with a real heart in their hands!

    NSPCC Number Day

The children enjoyed some fun ‘number activities’ in the hall to celebrate Number Day! They all thought about the different ways that they could represent numbers and wrote them onto large sheets collaboratively. They drew tallies, diagrams, pictures, counters and other images. Some children thought about what each number was in a different language!

The children also had a go a number ‘do its’ where they chose different forms of exercise then counted how many repetitions they could complete of each!

We have been really impressed with the Number Day outfits! It’s amazing how many items of clothing have numbers on without us even realising!
